Moviegoers reeled in shock from watching Reservoir Dogs two years prior to this, the crown for the planet's coolest film director was his to take. His second masterpiece, the enjoyable and ambitious Pulp Fiction, was first shown in Cannes, where the jury led by Clint Eastwood gave it the Palme d'Or award. After just a year, it had grossed $213million , competing with Forrest Gump at the Academy Awards and left a vast library of quotable lines in the minds of cinema-goers. Calling it a phenomenon is not an overstatement. The thought of making this new type of crime film had been invented by Tarantino his friend, Roger Avary (who by the way got a "story by" credit in the film). But the movie's secret recipe is the structure which is anti-chronological. This enabled the three stories in the film to cross paths in weird ways – they made the last story predate the first one, resurrecting in the end a character who dies in the middle story, walking toward a death we have already seen, but about which he does not have any idea or clue. This movie made it possible for Miramax to have a long reign, It also revived John Travolta's career and confirmed Tarantino's talents. This movie is a daring attempt to blend visual boldness and good storytelling, great music and films, art and trash. Really was one of a kind. [endtext]
